Western Australia Park of the Year

30 Jul 2024

Parks and Leisure Australia (WA) announced The Oval, part of the Subi East project, as the Winner of the 2024 Western Australia Park of the Year!

OCULUS, together with design partner UDLA, provided urban design and landscape architecture for Development WA’s 35 ha Subi East site surrounding the former Subiaco Oval on Whadjuk Country in Perth, including The Oval constructed by Landscape Elements.

Demolition of the old stadium provided a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to reimagine inner-city living, with a public realm design that places people and the environment first. The Oval, a 4.1 ha park, raises the bar on the provision of all-inclusive community assets and offers rich heritage learning experiences with a dual focus on Whadjuk Noongar heritage and Western Australian football history.

The Parks and Leisure Australia annual awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding initiatives and innovative efforts of ‘The People Behind the Places,’ who promote the wise use of leisure time for a multitude of social, environmental, and economic benefits to the community. It’s a celebration of those who contribute to creating vibrant, healthy, and inclusive spaces for all.

The Oval at Subi East will now compete as a finalist in the Parks and Leisure Australia National Awards of Excellence, announced on 15 October in Brisbane.
